Let’s get crafting!
What’s in a Waterslide Decal Craft Set?
When you order one of my craft sets, you’ll receive:
- Beautiful, ready-to-use waterslide decals featuring my unique designs.
- Easy instructions to guide you through every step.
All you need to provide is a few household basics:
- The item you’re decorating (candles, plates, bookmarks, baubles, mirrors, or glass).
- A bowl of lukewarm water.
- A soft cloth or paper towel.
- Optional: Clear sealant spray for added durability (especially for items like plates or glassware, but not for candles).
Step-by-Step: How to Apply Waterslide Decals
1. Prepare Your Surface
Make sure the item you’re decorating is clean and dry. For smooth surfaces like candles, plates, or glass, wipe them with a damp cloth or rubbing alcohol to remove dust or oils.
2. Cut Out Your Decal
Carefully cut around the decal design you want to use. You don’t need to cut perfectly—just close enough to avoid excess edges.
3. Soak the Decal
Place your decal in a bowl of lukewarm water for 20–30 seconds. If it’s your first time, start with a smaller design to practice.
Top Tip: Gently test if the decal moves slightly on the backing paper. If it doesn’t, soak it for a few more seconds. Be careful not to soak too long, as the decal may become fragile or tear.
4. Slide and Affix the Decal
Once the decal is ready, position the backing paper against your chosen surface. Carefully slide the backing paper away while simultaneously pressing part of the decal onto the surface.
Pro Tip: Work slowly and gently smooth the decal as you go to avoid wrinkles or air bubbles.
5. Smooth and Dry
Use a soft cloth or paper towel to remove excess water and smooth out any bubbles. Let the item dry completely—this usually takes 1–2 hours. For plates or frequently handled items, seal with a clear coat for durability.
Troubleshooting Common Decal Issues
Even with the best instructions, sometimes things don’t go as planned. Here’s how to troubleshoot:
- The decal isn’t sliding off the backing paper: Soak it in water for a few more seconds. If it still sticks, try lukewarm (not cold or hot) water.
- The decal tears or wrinkles: Work slowly and be gentle—these decals are delicate! Always start with a practice piece to get the hang of it.
- The decal was soaked too long and feels mushy: Let the next one soak for less time, testing it frequently.
